The Environment and the EU

The Environment and the EU

Climate Action is needed.

Climate Action is needed.

Many people have asked me why do we need regional or world governance at all. Apart from the diplomatic, trade, economic benefits (not just economics in terms of financial, social, welfare etc) but a properly governed regional/world government can provide change and action for the most important category of them all.

The Environment

Care of the Environment is no longer confined to a few tree huggers but has become a major international concern. Climate change is real and the years we have lived through from the year 2000 are proof of that.

We just had the warmest year on record (2014). A second typhoon in a year just battered the Philippines with enormity (though you could argue it’s not directly linked). Climate change isn’t new and has happened in the history of this planet before, but never has it been down to mankind as it has been since the industrial revolution began. We have been unlocking carbon stored underground and pumping it directly out into the atmosphere (along with CFCs and other gases). Yet, We have some that still deny whether climate change is happening. This isn’t a post of whether climate change is or isn’t happening however. It’s about the environment, keeping the air we breath clean, the seas we fish in clean, the rivers we fish in clean, our existence and that of many species safe.

Why national governments can’t succeed with Environmental policy

National governments are often short sighted. It’s not their fault as most governments serve a term of 5 years. The focus will always be on the next election. The Environment requires very long term commitments and not short-run policy patches.

This is where regional or world governance can come in. The UN is not restrained by terms or the slow speed of democracy in this case. The EU does have a democratic parliament so can be restricted in terms of speed. In acting to form policy. Some issues which national governments have are not present at EU or international level.

But Climate Change will only effect other continents

Well, this isn’t the case (and stop being so selfish if you think that’s the case!) “A recent paper produced by the Climate Action Network highlights the impacts of climate change on Europe, of which Oxfam is focusing on the food and agriculture aspect of the report. With projected agricultural outputs expected to decrease 2% each decade for the next century in a world where food demand is set to increase by 14% in the same period, it is time for climate impacts on food security โ€“ inside and outside Europe โ€“ to be brought onto the agenda.” As agriculture represents 3.5% of the 28 Member state European Unions GDP and employs 17 million people it would be one of the hardest hit sectors and this is what the Oxfam source recognises.

We have seen yields in Europe decrease this year due to a change in climate (regardless of whether it’s a one-off or the beginning of a pattern). I talk of the Olive yield this year which is down on years previous, due to drought.

How far should things be left to the market to resolve?

It’s a normative question and the answer to this may depend on a persons politics. Politicans on the right would tend to favour a lesser degree of intervention (a more hands of approach) those on the left generally would prefer intervention.

The EU uses ‘cap and trade’ principle. The EU Emissions trading scheme is in it’s third phase.

Note: I’ve decided to make this a living post and will update accordingly (in the post or comments below). I chose to do this mainly as I don’t have much time now not even to proof-read. I’m doing a project in my Economics module, focusing on Environmental Economics. I hope I can provide more of an insight into this subject area (and be able to explain whats in my head with clarity!) more then! I’ll update this often once I’ve completed my project ๐Ÿ™‚

FutureLearn – Simply amazing!!

The Futurelearn week schedule!

The Futurelearn week schedule!

It’s all about FutureLearn.com! How many of you have heard of MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses)??

Simply put I’m finding them amazing. I’ve only done courses from Futurelearn at the moment. If you love learning about new things you will love MOOCs! I’ve signed up to so many interesting courses on Futurelearn. Not had time to complete them all yet. There are other MOOCs providers such as coursera.com, most courses are provided by US universities.

Futurelearn and their teaching methods!

Futurelearn and their teaching methods! ๐Ÿ™‚

I’m a real geek and when I get free time (very rare these days) I like to drink a beer and expand my mind. It’s incredible the depth to which topics are covered.

You can even claim a certificate (non-formal) once a certain percentage of the course is completed!

Khan Academy is another website I find extremely useful, mainly for university help at the moment (with Economics) but it also has many other interesting subjects under constant expansion. The way the instructor Salman Khan explains things is great, you don’t actually see his face he uses an electronic blackboard to explain and draw diagrams.

I have a course that ran a month or two ago on Futurelearn called Developing Your Research Project from the University of Southampton. This will come in very handy for Economics for when I start my research project next year. I’m going to try and start that online course soon so I can be prepared. It’s great for anyone who wants to expand their mind, prepare before they start their university degree, or just kill time! These courses don’t have to be completed by the dates they run but it’s best that way to interact with the other students. I have yet to do one according to schedule. I’m simply too busy!

Au revoir for now readers! ๐Ÿ™‚

Love being so busy!

Heavy reading? Aiming for 100% in everything :)

Heavy reading? Aiming for 100% in everything ๐Ÿ™‚

As I said in my previous post, I think I’d be more then a little busy this year this has turned out to be true.

I’ve bought two economics books as I really want too boost my grades in Economics. Andrew Gillispies book seems to be more lighter and suitable to introduce newbies into Economics.

Doing two modules at once with the open university was always gonna be tough. Economics much tougher then politics but on the whole both very engaging, interesting and applicable to the real world.

Today at work I had what I thought was the beginning of a good conversation going with a customer. She asked me what I was studying I told her PPE and she then asked what career options am I thinking of. I told her EU or civil service. She told me to keep quiet it’s a dirty word then told me how soldiers fought and died so dictators at the EU wouldn’t make laws for us and how the EU is undemocratic. I didn’t say this but was just thinking as she was mouthing off… The EU is an example of representative democracy. Like our nation is. It’s not a direct democracy. It has stayed true to its founding principles as laid down by Sir Winston Churchill and Robert Schuman amongst others. It’s by no means perfectly democratic but what institution is? We can act to improve it. She then started talking or should I say SHOUTING about Mr Farage and she wouldn’t stop. Rambling on about him being a man of the British people. Looking out for British workers. Much how a certain German politician promised to before the Second World War I guess. She sounded like she was brainwashed unfortunately considering I wasn’t answering her at this stage because she was so ill informed and seemed so ignorant to anybody else.

I couldn’t believe all that reaction came from my career path to be honest. It’s scary to think we have ignorant and the ill informed in the country who cannot even reason or disagree in a polite manner without raising their voices to be heard. If I had been a ex-soldier or if I said I wanted to join the army how would she have viewed me then? Presumably in a positive light despite the fact I may have ended the lives of people with a gun or maybe going on to. Really is this what has Britain come to? Hmmm. Something doesn’t sit right ๐Ÿ™

So as you can see politics comes up even without intention. Maybe more so because of my pathway. I’m finding I’ve learnt so much more though. When walking around shops or any public place my economics and politics knowledge seems to kick in! I read the economist and understand more and more week by week. It’s all very exciting ๐Ÿ™‚

My exams for economics are in June so a lot of prep ahead!

I went to Paris on March 25th. It’s a beautiful city but not as beautiful as Brussels! It was a rainy day but still it was nice to be away from London for a change. I can’t believe it being only a train ride away I never been. Take a look at the assortment of photos below.

It was lovely though, didn’t want to return home. Day trips do feel really long though. I’m planning to go racing again and go gym after I finish DD209 – Running the Economy. Then I can focus just on DD203 – Power, dissent, equality: understanding contemporary politics. Once DD203 finishes in September 2014, I will be moving on to DD309 – Doing economics: people, markets and policy this looks to be interesting.

I probably won’t post again till after the 6th June 2014. When I actually stop going full-time and go part-time with my studies again.

Till next time. See you ๐Ÿ™‚

A girlfriend? Hmm

A few things annoy me. Such as when my family ask if I have a girlfriend. Its not any of your business so why continually ask? I suppose its a way of striking up convo. So so irritating and I get asked a lot.

Another is my youngish looks. People think I’m younger then I actually am due to my baby face. Ah well. I need to just stop moaning I guess. Looking young and being single is a blessing ๐Ÿ™‚

What a useless post…

What makes you happy? How do you measure success?

Not posted in a bit had a lot to do. Had my third uni assignment to do. It was terrible in my eyes, rushed and unstructured. I didn’t understand a lot of what I was supposed to do!!

Then my car needed a MOT and tax. Then I needed to submit company accounts (submitted two days late do I got a penalty notice). Ah, feel so stressed and peeved out right about now. This isn’t even to mention a friendship with a best friend broke down over the past week ๐Ÿ™

Trying to put that behind me and just focus on studying. In a bit behind again and just trying to be happy.

Anyway I’ve diverted from the topic of my blog post. It was more about something I heard on question time this week, and from Piers Morgans interview with Jason Donovan that got me thinking. How do others measure success??

Piers Morgan's Life Stories: Jason Donavan

I know some people will think entirely from a cash sense here! I don’t think greed is a good answer for such a question. I have a friend who is well off, and may consider the fact that her next generation (children) will not need to work or the next. Is this success for you? Is this what makes you happy? Worryingly it seems most people in this country would agree.

I’m not saying it’s greedy to want loads of money, by some means that’s fine, but that’s what’s trashing our country. Ask any young person what they want to do in life. You won’t often hear help people out in blah blah, or become a blah blah. Increasingly you here it become money related. As if money is the key to success. Maybe this culture has been imposed on use little people by the big bankers?

I’ve always wondered where this stems from. Greed has taken over this country from the top down. Bankers who need that extra ยฃ1,000 bonus to the people out on the streets last August helping themselves to goodies ๐Ÿ™‚

Still the core question goes unanswered. What is success? For someone it could be doing a cleaning role in that hotel. Which their family classes them as a failure for doing. Success is something very much measured by the individual. Sometimes it gets clouded up.

For this who are wondering what I was referring two in the two TV programmes. In question time a young “entrepreneur” mentioned the higher rate of tax and that it might/will make him consider learning a new language and taking business abroad. Another gentleman right after explained to him that it says more about then our tax system. To which he got a clap from the audience. Who’s in the right there? The young person who wants to pay less tax so he gets to keep even more of his money? Well, if our greedy politicians can do it why can’t the general population? Examples need to be set for society to follow again.

Regarding Jason Donovan, he mentioned after his drug abuse the new outlook he had on life. How does one measure success? He felt he had it all until his drug abuse. He mentioned for some it’s surviving cancer, making it through the day, getting their chosen job, or making that next single number one. Interesting points.

I’ve wrote quite a lot here but I believe I have a new outlook on success. I don’t take it is seriously as I do now and just seek for happiness. My success would be getting my degree if I ever get there ๐Ÿ˜›

If its difficult to read its because I’ve wrote this from my iPhone WordPress app. Sorry!

On that note I love you readers and please use the comments box for thoughts. I know theres a few lurkers out there! ๐Ÿ™‚

Probably one reason why I don’t like football…

A fight during a match between Bradford and Crawley

The players attitudes. The on the pitch spitting, swearing, constantly arguing with the referee. That’s not even including the frequent fights/personal injury caused them on the field. It’s called the beautiful game but every time I watch a game I see something that makes me sick.

It’s not just limited to players. The fans too sometimes have similar attitudes (I am trying hard not to generalise in this post!). Probably following the acceptable behaviour of their favourite player on the field.

Granted not every fan or player is like this but the those that are really show the sport in a bad light.

Some of them just aren’t worth their money. To behave in such a way is unacceptable. Obviously passions run high and a moment of madness can be tolerated from time to time but it’s just so frequent in footy ๐Ÿ™

It’s not just me a quick google search will reveal similar thoughts too. I wonder why?

Beautiful weather = Lazy mixedmatt

Nice sunny day!

I just got my marks for my second assignment today. Very good. Same as the first!!However it was much tougher then the first. I needed to put together an essay plan and structure. As well as select he most appropriate parts of what I had studied, to answer the essay question. I will dissect it and look at my tutors comments later on. Even more detailed comments this time and praise!

Today has been such a nice day again! ๐Ÿ˜€

I’m kind of saving for another Clio. Really looking for a 04 or 05 when I have the cash. I hate taking buses and travelling around slowly. I will do my research this time.

I’ve been having a tricky time of late and no doubt will have a even trickier one next month but one person has helped me through things a little. Shes even tried to help me gain confidence to talk to the person I like (even if I’m still to shy to do anything face to face ). Really strange thing is despite the fact she went to my university we haven’t met yet. Hopefully we will soon ๐Ÿ™‚

Nobody gave me music in my last post. I know I have a reader base out there even if it is small! Give me some good music!! My iPod really needs updating.

On a separate note I can’t express how much I hate how iTunes handles all my iPhone music. Having no drag and drop is nonsense and I don’t want to sync to a playlist either!
